The Guardian (UK) published a list of “10 best novels set in Russia”. The list includes Alisa Ganieva’s novel “The Mountain and the Wall”. “Dagestan is not really a holiday destination, even when there’s no pandemic, and a novel about Islamic radicalisation isn’t likely to encourage tourists. But Ganieva skilfully uses words from some of the 30-old local languages and fragments of poems, fables, dreams and diaries to evoke this diverse republic sandwiched between war-torn Chechnya and the Caspian Sea”.
